The first challenge was getting to the trailhead. The first 30 miles out of Kanab were easy – the last 8 miles were more challenging. An unpaved, rocky dirt road that we definitely, definitely shouldn’t have taken our rental car down. We took it slowly – ten miles an hour makes eight miles an interminable distance – and were a bit unsettled when we saw a 4x4 tear past us only to promptly get a flat tyre and pull over. Nerves in shreds, we finally made it to the trailhead and started the hike to The Wave.
